I have fond memories of a dear friend of my mother who made sock monkey toys. She never did make one for me, but I do remember seeing them and being fascinated by the fact that she had made it from a sock! I recently heard that a company was planning to market an Obama black sock monkey toy, hoping that Obama supporters would buy them up and love them to pieces. They were dismayed when the news of the release was met with outrage and accusations of racism. That is unfortunate for both sides of the issue. I think that it was incredibly naive of the company to think that people would NOT think this was racist, and I think it is unfortunate that in our country there is just cause for people to think that it IS racist. It is a shame all along; I understand that there are sock monkey George Bush toys out there somewhere, so I don’t think that this was an intentional slight.
This coming weekend I will be going to the wedding of one of our neighbor’s daughters. They asked me to come over to their house last weekend for the bridal shower and to help them put bird seed in little tulle bags. There were several other neighborhood ladies there as well as the bride and bridesmaids and several of the bride’s friends and we had a nice party while we were working.
We played some of the traditional bridal shower games and had quite a few good laughs. We got to see the wedding gown modeled by the bride, which was wonderful!
They told me that they are having a beach theme wedding. She was showing me the cutest beach wedding favors that they plan to use for the wedding reception. They are providing all of the guests with flip-flops to wear at the reception, and they are decorating the tables with shells, candles that look like sand castles, and bowls full of sand with tea light candles in them. Everything looked very cool! They asked me to come to the reception hall the night before the wedding to help get it set up and decorated. They plan to decorate it with lobster pots, buoy wind chimes, beach umbrellas and fish nets. The place should look terrific!
I bought a bag of corn from the feed store to use to sew into micro-wavable heating pads. I brought it home and opened it up to fill the bags I had sewn, and I was totally grossed out because it was full of bugs! I ended up scattering the corn in the back yard for the deer to enjoy. Now I don’t know where I can go to buy the corn, they don’t sell it at the health food stores anymore!
